HISTORY
Xylitol was first discovered by German Chemist Emil Fisher and French Chemist M.G. Bertrand, but it became significant in the early 70's when Finnish researchers found that it exhibits Superior Dental Benefits. Xylitol sweetened chewing gums and mints are great Finnish Inventions. Industrialized Xylitol manufacturing began in Finland and the first Xylitol chewing gums and mints in the world were produced in Finland. This invention soon became a daily health habit in every Finn's life. Xylitol is formed from the Greek words "xylon" meaning hardwood, and "oli" which refers to the terminology of organic chemistry. From a chemical standpoint, Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, and not actually a sugar. Unlike other polyol (sugar) sweeteners, Xylitol has a five-carbon structure, which means it is antimicrobial (prevents the growth of bacteria). While sugar is acid-forming, xylitol is alkaline enhancing. This is the key reason why Xylitol has been proven to be the only sweetener that shows both passive and active anti-cavity effects. Xylitol is naturally present in many fruits and vegetables, as well as in corncobs and various hardwood trees like birch. It can be said that Xylitol has been a natural component of mankind's diet throughout the years. Xylitol is also produced by the human body, from 5 to 15 grams per day as an intermediate in the normal metabolism of glucose. Xylitol Timeline:
BENEFITS Xylitol exhibits dental health benefits that are superior to other polyols (sweetener), in all areas where polyols have been shown to have an effect so far. Furthermore, its effects on oral flora and mutans streptococci add to its cavity prevention profile and gives Xylitol an important role in Preventive Dental Care. In addition, it has also been found through research, that regular consumption of Xylitol products by children can reduce the occurrence of Acute Otitis Media (middle ear infection). As a result of the benefits related to the usage of Xylitol, it has been granted Functional Food Status in Finland. The safety of Xylitol has been proven in long-term clinical studies and has been confirmed by all the major regulatory bodies worldwide. Xylitol is approved for use in food and especially in oral hygiene products, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Currently Xylitol is approved in more than 60 Countries. Xylitol is metabolized independently of insulin and is slowly absorbed; therefore it is suitable for Diabetic Patients as well. Xylitol is considered a low glycemic ingredient having a glycemic index of approximately 8.5. Just like any polyol sweetener such as sorbitol, Xylitol may induce a laxative effect or slight cramping. However, since the body makes xylitol daily, as well as the enzymes to break it down, any discomfort usually disappears within a few days. TASTE Xylitol is sweet, the sweetest of all known polyols with no unpleasant after taste. Xylitol is just as sweet as sugar with 40% fewer calories or 2.4 kcal/gram. Also, xylitol is the coolest of all known polyols. Xylitol has a pleasant cooling sensation when it dissolves in the mouth. This is one of the reasons xylitol is perfect as a sweetener in chewing gums and mints, especially with peppermint and fruit. PROCESS The mechanisms of the action of xylitol are based on its 5-carbon structure. Xylitol stops the acid production in plaque when consumed after a meal. Acid production in dental plaque after a meal dissolves tooth enamel when the ph decreases below 5.7. But with xylitol, this does not happen as acid production is stopped. Regular xylitol consumption reduces the numbers on "caries bacteria", mutans streptococci and the amount and adhesiveness of plaque. AMOUNT For maximum benefits, xylitol should be consumed on a daily basis. Studies have shown that levels of mutans streptococci decrease with a daily dose of 6.88 grams per day, but not 3.44 grams per day. The studies concluded that daily doses of 5 xylitol grams per day will reduce both the counts of mutans streptococci as well as the occurrence of cavities. |
